We are the B!

But that doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to dream.

I just watched Dream High 2 episode 9, and once again it reminds me of the reason why I love Dream High, despite it being infested with idols and how everyone often readily cast a condescending opinion over idol-infested dramas like Dream High.

Far from it actually. The reason why I loved Dream High 1 when it first came out is because rather than it being about handsome idols and pretty singers, Dream High is about dreaming high, and achieving your near-impossible dreams. It is about people who are ordinary and common, seemingly not worth noticing, yet they possess an incredible amount of hidden talent, and it is this talent that will make them beautiful.

It is about the fight for impossible dreams, the harsh reality within it, and temptations to stoop low to despicable means, yet one fights to achieve their dreams without having to become a person they are ashamed of.

In short, it describes the music industry, and people who do not want to fall into the stereotypical traps (drugs, alcohol, sex etc), unlike many other people who works in the music industry.

I feel that Dream High 2 actually brings out the ‘ordinary, common people’ more strongly. It’s about people who are not the best, not the top of the world, not the cream of the crop, yet does it means they are not allowed to have a dream?

I think Dream High 2 is such a great drama with an incredible learning point for much of our society today. With this mad rush towards becoming the best, and the ‘best’ increasingly thinking that they are better than anyone else, and the discrimination against those who are ordinary and less talented than they are. Even if they are not the best, does that take away their right to dream?

Of course, reality is harsh and there is a good reason why only the best makes it and the second-best are better off finding other alternatives. But in the midst of such a harsh reality, it is still important at times, to remind ourselves that everyone has a right to dream, and who knows, maybe even the B-rated will one day surpass all expectations and become A-class.

I’ve translated the lyrics into English. I am not good with lyrics translation seriously, because much is lost in translation, but here is my (first?) attempt at translating lyrics. Please feel free to correct me ^^

Translation notes:
I am very bothered by the chorus. So much is lost in translation in English.
In Korean, it is actually a wordplay! But I can’t bring that out in English.

The first line is of course, “B B B” referring to B-rated and the B-class as opposed to the best A-class.
The third line 비 is also pronounced as ‘B’ or ‘bi’, and can mean rain (bi). But in this case, it is actually hanja 非 which is also written as 비(非) and also pronounced as ‘bi’ or ‘B’, meaning ‘not’.

정상 (jeong sang) in the third line is very interesting.

정상 (jeong sang) means ‘the top’ or ‘the summit’. In hanja, it is 頂上. Since 비(非）means ‘not’ and 정상 (頂上) means ‘the top’, 비정상 (bi jeong sang) means they are not top-notch.

The thing is, 비정상 is rarely used to express “not top-notch”. 비정상’s other hanja meaning is actually 非正常 which is more commonly used. If you can read Chinese characters, you will know that 비정상 (非正常) can also mean ‘extraordinary, unique, abnormal’.

So I think this is actually an interesting word play, to mean two different meanings,
one: their desire to be at the top, and
two: they who sincerely believe that they can also be extraordinary and exceptional.

That’s my interpretation! Obviously this is lost in translation when in English…
I’m glad I understand Chinese, therefore Korean Hanja is not that difficult for me.

Beautiful song! And I guess you also need to watch this drama to really understand how much meaning there is, because it’s about this group of friends who are second-rated, and have been hurt in the process of achieving their dreams. This song is for them.

It was Sunday when I came home from school, my Twitter timeline is a mess. Everyone keep talking about a video. An interview Block B did when they're at Thailand. I have no idea what it's all about but then I saw translation and some people hating. Yea, at that time fake translations were everywhere and since there'e too many hating comments I was like "okay this is scary they trolled this time but they might offended someone or something or the whole country?" then yesss, i closed the video bcause I can't stand the comments. I closed Twitter and hoped that when I log in the next day, there's no more issue about this. I sleep in anxiety.

I went to school, came home late and found out that the things get worsen. I was stomped for a moment when I saw tooo much hates. When I saw non BBCs especially non BBCs bashed them. It was totally butthurting. There's 2 Kiss Me(s) in my timeline that HATE BLOCK B TO THE CORE JUST BECAUSE DONGHO TWEETED SOMETHING ABOUT THEM AND HE HAS TO DELETE IT AND HE HAS TO APOLOGIZED I WAS LIKE WHAT THE?!!!! That has no connection to Block B at all. He bashed Block B as if Block B stomped Dongho for his action. Kfine there might be some BBCs that done the wrong things to him but still.. it's unacceptable. They also said that they're on Khunnie's side WHEN THEY DIDN'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO SPELL NICKHUN'S NAME PREPERLY I was like ajksjakjskajsa I feel like interrupting when they talk bad about Block B in my timeline. But since I still have my mind, I stopped. There's no use to talke to people like these. It's useless. What I can do is just tweeting about peace. And hoping that they'll realize. I just don't want to be mean this time. It's for the sake of the boys.

I send some tweets to Dongho and Nickhun to showed them that BBCs are not blaming them It's their right to say everything (but yea actually I don't think so, they're public figure they shouldn't do that but still they're human too) I hope they read it, I specially wrote in hangul for Dongho too. Block B and 2PM and UKiss hwaitiiiiiiing! ❤ ‏

The issue grew bigger and bigger. People even bashed Zico's mother in her Cyworld and she ended up deleteing it :/ Large sites like Allkpop just make the situation worse. The articles seemed like they were made to stomp Block B. It was butthurting once again. Seems like no one is on their side. They released their writing super long and deep apologies. All members do it. And Woo Jiho, that man, that leader of Block B shaved his head. A thing that no one will ever do if they're in his shoes. It was heartbreaking once again. Just yesterday they released a video apology. It was seriously deepy super mega heartbreaking. They bowed 90degree everytime they meet someone even the hoobaes :/

Mighty Mouth Sangchu showed his support through Twitter. We saw a bit of light. Zico's brother Taewoon also tweet such a sweet tweet that almost make me cried. Mino also post something on his Cyworld. B.A.P clapped their hands in the air when the MC shout uot Block B's name. When everyone is ignoring them on stage, Jay Park come and talked to them. These kind of support make me cried again.

They changed the choreography for Nanrina the part that everyone make a bow, not 90 degree but they changed it to 90 degree just to show that they're really sorry :/

What else, there's too many things that happened. I didn't mentioned haters because I think it's no use. Most of haters that I meet during this period sucks. Not real haters just some retarded haters. Won't talk much about them, they're retarded. I've also learnt to not talk much with them, If they say thing like "Don't ever come to Thailand again" I tell them to go and live in a stranded island because they can't accept people with mistakes. When someone said "make this group shut down" I'll simply replied "you just shut up" with a smiley. But seriously, people who can't accept people with mistakes even after they apologized should go and live in stranded islands. If you're that perfect then go somewhere else don't even come back. Humans will always make mistakes. That's how we learn and fix ourselves.

I admitted that usual big company won't let their idols do this. Other big groups will make a press conference and says that they'll be suspended for some times. Be on hiatus until no one remember the tragedy. But BNS, they're new. Half of the company was LOENENT's (sc: tumblr) Cho PD doesn't even know what to do. It might be stupid for common kpop fans. But to BBCs, this showed that BNS is real company! Real family. They didn't even forced them to apology! They didn't make Zico sit down and shave his pride! Woo Jiho do it on his own will. Cho PD didn't locked them in a room. They are free to use the internet, seeing hateful and supportive comments. THEY DIDN'T RUN FROM PROBLEM THEY'RE FACING IT!! This is not something that's easy to be done! Mad respect to each of the people in Brand New Stardom.

Lastly, Block B please know that Blockbuster Club is always here! K-BBCs and I-BBCs are one! K-BBCs is showing their support by chanting beautiful fanchants and it get louder day by day. While I-BBCs are also doing our best supporting in every way we could. Please be strong. All we want is your smiles back. We just want the old Block b back.
